Abstract The advances in paediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery have greatly improved the survival of children with Congenital Heart Disease (CHD); the population of adults with CHD is then increasing both in numbers and complexity of lesions. Mean age is also increasing, carrying an additional risk of acquired diseases. Adult CHD patients often require emergency hospital admissions for cardiac or extracardiac causes. A large number of complications is typical for the underlying cardiac defect and treatment require a specific knowledge of the specific condition in order to provide a skilled approach. Among cardiovascular causes, arrhythmias (more frequently supraventricular arrhythmias) represent the most common reason for admission to the hospital; another quite common cause is represented by congestive heart failure. Non cardiac surgery may carry a high risk of complications, especially in complex CHD; a risk stratification is then needed. Key words: Congenital heart diseases in adults; Emergency hospital admissions; Cardiac emergencies. |
